Complete Guide
to the Golf Courses of Scotland
by Robert Kroeger
If
you are planning your trip to the land of golf, this book is for you.
Over 430 Scottish courses are covered as well as the top 25 in England
and Ireland. This softbound book has 258 pages and helps those outside
the British Isles to more fully appreciate their trip to the Mecca of
Golf. Before the listing of courses, nine chapters give golfers full
preparation for their trip. Golfers will learn: how to arrange a game
with Scottish club members; a short history on the game of golf;
sample golf itineraries to Scotland; information on Scottish golf
traditions; how to play links courses; tips on travel and
accommodations. Courses are indexed for quick reference and a list of
course ratings are provided at the end of each geographical section. THIS BOOK WILL BE PERSONALLY INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR, IF YOU INDICATE THIS WHEN ORDERING.
Many
golfers take a guided tour on their first visit the British Isles
which usually includes some well-known courses that host the British
Open. However there is much fun to be had in Scotland by playing some
lesser known but not necessarily lesser challenging courses. One of
the major points of this book is that you can have more fun playing a
three hour (or less!) round with club members than enduring a five
hour marathon on an 'Open' course.
- "Kroeger's book seem ideally suited to giving visitors to
our shores a great deal of relevant information ... which will
decidedly enhance the quality of their vacation." - From the
foreword by Bobby Burnet, Historian Emeritus to the Royal and
Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland.
- "Very complete and entertaining. A 'Bible' for those
traveling to the British Isles." - Gary Wiren, Ph.D. and master
PGA professional.
Excerpt
from the book: "This grand old course is probably the
best historical golfing bargain in the world. The holes remain
virtually unchanged from when the British Open was last held here in
1889 (won by Willie Park, Jr.). Records show that golf was played on
these links in the 1400s, which is when golfers first played on the
Old Course at St. Andrews. ... In those days [the 1800s] the large
stone buildings that now line the fairways were stately clubhouses of
the great golf clubs." (Description of the Old Links at
Musselburgh)
About
the Author: Robert Kroeger makes an annual pilgrimage to the golf
courses of the British Isles. He has played over 250 courses in
Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. He belongs to
Royal North Devon Golf Club in England, whose course was originally designed by Tom Morris.
He is a former member of Royal Dornoch in Scotland, another Morris course. A member
of the Golf Collectors Society and the British Golf Collectors'
Society, Kroeger enjoys researching early golf course architecture.
Playing off a four handicap, his favorite matches are against members
of the lesser known clubs in the Kingdom.

Across the Pond
by Michael T. Schaefer
This
hardbound book, complete with 80 full-color photos of courses,
portrays the sensation of seaside golf in the British Isles. The first
time pilgrim or the frequent visitor crossing the Atlantic will
experience all the wind, rolling fairways, strangling rough, fiendish
bunkers, and cunning greens in this 'golfing treasure house of the
world.' A wealth of incidents which have been repeated by generations
of golfers are here as reported by the practitioners of the greatest
literature in sport. Bernard Darwin, Bobby Jones, Alister MacKenzie
... as well as lesser known, but equally entertaining, club historians
'play through' in the text accompanying the photos.
- "A loving stroll across the ancient links, in the learned,
literate company of Bernard Darwin, Henry Longhurst, and others. The
text is as spare and simple as a Scottish clubhouse, but as with a
Scottish clubhouse nothing more is needed." - George Peper,
Editor, Golf Magazine.
- "Across the Pond is a song of deep affection for the misty
places where golf began. Michael Schaefer takes you with him on a
tour of the great courses of Great Britain. ... It's the best
golfing trip you'll ever take." - Jack Whitaker, ABC Sports
Excerpt
from the book: "The ancient game of golf took root on the
youngest landforms of Scotland. The glacial movements after the Ice
Age formed the seaside links 6,000 years ago. The immense oceans that
pounded, ebbed, and eventually receded from the coastlines of the
British Isles left behind deposits that were then blown inland forming
dune ridges and sand plains which were colonized first by resilient
grasses and scrub bushes, and then by golfers."
About the author: Michael Schaefer writes
from 14 years' links experience on 75 different courses, played under
different conditions and levels of skill. His golf memberships include
the Golf Collectors Society and many overseas which, though numerous,
have been sadly temporary.

Itineraries to Scotland
Robert Kroeger has traveled to nearly all parts of
the British Isles including Ireland, Wales, Scotland, England, and
Northern Ireland. He makes an annual pilgrimage in search of hidden
gems in Scotland and England. With the badges of many blisters,
wind-burn, and tired feet, he has played on over 250 different courses
ranging from the exclusive Muirfied to the 'wee delights' of the
original Bruntsfield links on Edinburgh green where he had his first
hole in one (which is still questioned by his playing partner).
If
you are going for the first time and want to plan your own trip, ask
the voice of experience for some advice. If you have traveled often to
Scotland but want to take a chance on some 'unknown' regions or some
lesser-known courses, a bit of first-hand knowledge may go a long way
to making your trip more enjoyable.
Simply
list the courses you want to play or the region of Scotland which you
want to explore. I will send you my opinion of the
courses and information on club members availability, and give you an idea of
the golfing experience each course offers. This service is complimentary when you order three or more books. Note: No travel
arrangements or golf tee times are included.
