GOLF COURSES OF
THE BRITISH ISLES
Can't
make it to Scotland or England or Ireland this year? Still have that
itch to travel to the magical Kingdom of Golf? I'll take you there
through the monthly newsletter on this site. In each issue of the newsletter I'll
describe two gems. These won't be the courses on the British Open
rotation - those you've seen on t.v. and read about in countless
golf magazines. Instead, they'll be courses that offer good golf,
often fantastic scenery, and usually outstanding hospitality and
camaraderie. I'll post photos of each course - some may
be historical. Read about gems like Cullen of the northeastern
tip of Scotland - with its massive rocky sea stacks that Old Tom
Morris used as hazards. Courses like Ben Hogan's favorite Panmure,
England's Wallasey, Ireland's Rossapena, and Willie
Park's Huntercombe. Visit the Victorian village of Strathpeffer
Spa and go back in a time warp to the 1890s. Sample the architectural delights of West Herts, the
cliffs of Royal Tarlair, and the quaintness of a nearly
original century-old course, the Bridge of Allan. They might
even be good enough to make your 'must-play' dream list. I can't
guarantee it won't rain when you play the courses but at least when
you read about them in my newsletter, you'll be dry and smiling.
In the first volume of the newsletter (1998 issues), I've provided a profile of a historical golfer or an interesting golf incident of bygone years. I also tossed in a column on travel tips to prepare you for your 'dream' trip. After playing a lot of courses in all kinds of conditions, I've accumulated a lot of first-hand experiences that can help to make your trip more enjoyable. With tips on weather conditions, driving (not that difficult!!), B&Bs/hotels, sites of local interest (including pubs), your travels to these wonderful destinations will be more rewarding. About the author, Robert Kroeger. This slightly unbalanced individual has played nearly 200 courses in the British Isles and has thoroughly enjoyed nearly everyone. Home-based in Cincinnati, he spends most of the year planning and dreaming about an annual trip to somewhere (usually Scotland) in the British Isles in search of hidden gems. With a handicap ranging from 3 to 6, he belongs to Royal Dornoch Golf Club in Scotland and Royal North Devon in England. His literary memberships include the Golf Collectors Society, the British Golf Collectors' Society, and the James Braid Golfing Society. He has written two books on Scottish golf, Complete Guide to the Golf Courses of Scotland and The Golf Courses of Old Tom Morris.
